Mid-Hudson
Community Orchestra
Concert Info | About the
Orchestra |

There is a winter and spring concert given at the Community College each
year.
The Mid-Hudson Community Orchestra is a not for profit organization that has
been in existence for many years, starting as an adult education course, then as a
separate entity, under the name of Southern Dutchess Pops Orchestra. Recently, the
orchestra decided to change the name to reflect the broad geographic area that it does
represent. The mission of the orchestra remains the same, to take music to those who would
not ordinarily have the opportunity to go to hear a performance of classical music and
show tunes. Several times a year, the full orchestra goes to area nursing homes and
retirement complexes to give live performances for the residents and their families.
In the fall of 1998 the
orchestra and Dutchess Community College formed a partnership and became an orchestra in
residence at the college. Dutchess Community College students enrolled in the Music
Performance Program, are able to participate in the orchestra for college credit. The
College provides rehearsal space and we are able to give free concerts in the theater of
the College.
Meeting Wednesday evenings from 7:30 to 9:30 pm
throughout the academic year, musicians come together to rehearse. Our 35 to 40 members
are from all walks of life and include all ages from high school to retired persons. We
draw members from Dutchess and Ulster counties. We are interested in encouraging those
with music experience to join. There are no auditions, but we expect that members be able
to read music, and be able to play at a minimum of a high school level, as time does not
permit individual instruction. It is a labor of love by people who enjoy playing in an
orchestral setting. New members are welcome. Anyone wishing more information may call
Dottie Fricker at 845-876-2765.
